Music Monday: 13 top covers of 6 Michael Jackson tunes

Cyrille Aimee

I love jazz. I love Michael Jackson songs. So you can imagine my delight when I regularly come across the most amazing MJ covers by some of the most amazing jazz artists. These pop classics are now jazz standards. I thought I’d share my favourites with you.

I want Cyrille Aimee to be my new best friend and get an invite to her parties: Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’  – then crash out on her sofa while she serenades me with Off The Wall.

Let’s have a little bit of toe tapping, finger clicking big band swing time with Paul Anka and The Way You make Me Feel.

Slip into a soft Bossa Nova mood with Marcela Mangebeira ‘s  Human Nature and Rock With You. Then let Miles Davis and his band take Human Nature to a whole new level before you settle down to let James Torme’s smooth jazz Rock With You sooth you. (If you prefer a reggae beat, then try Terrus Riley’s Human Nature.   (I know, it’s not jazz, but it’s such a happy vibe).

I Can’t Help It: The Stevie Wonder/Susaye Greene penned ballad continues to inspire many artists.

From the gentle, string led Latin vibe of Quatuor Ebene featuring Stacey Kent, to the soulful, velvety tones of Will Downing  and Maysa and then out the other side with the funky and fast African rhythms of Theo Croker and Dee Bridgewater’s version before swinging back round to the sweet jazz-soul groove of Esperanza Spalding.

Other covers are available: rock, r&b, country – and a bigger variety of MJ’s songs, including Beat It, Dirty Diana and more.  I just didn’t like them as much as these.  Search Michael Jackson covers and I’m sure you’ll find your own top 10-ish.
